What's New in the Attic - updates & assorted tidbits
Permalink

I know what you're thinking - " New? How can anything be NEW, when EVERYTHING is new?"  To be honest - I'm always tinkering with something around here, same as in the old site.  Looking for ways to improve your experiance, and give you more fun for the click!
As some of you have discovered, there are special members only pages, hiding under the "Join Us" button .   To name a few, not only can you veiw the members list, but you can also invite friends to join us (you do need to sign in to do that) , or view our birthday calendar.   If they click "Attic" at the top of the page, they'll be taken to the main area.
So far, Popcorn Theater houses 38 full length feature films.
Song on a page drving you nuts?  Scroll all the way down and you'll find a tiny player that you can click 'off'.
I'm not going to tell you everything that's there - I like to have a few surprises!   But, every now and then, I'll post updates here, as I know some of you short-cut straight to messages, and I don't want y'all to miss out!

Added today:  At the top if the Attic's entrance you will see an add us to your favorites link.  Several have asked for this  and now you have it - use it! lol
I know it's rather plain.  But I am working on something 'fancier'.

ADDED - Tutorials  to the main entrance menu.  As needed I will write them.   Currently contains Sign In Help  and  Adding a picture to your post.  If someone is having difficulties signing in - please refer them to that tutorial.
ADDED-  Didi's Dungeon.  They've been chatting with us for about a year.  Their 'apartment' here in the Attic contains live links.   Please welcome them to our happy home.  Also here are The DartBoard (souix's room)  and Magic's files ( Intrigue's filing cabinet).
Uploaded a blank game grid  to make adding grided games a bit easier.

You may have notice some of our custom pages look a bit different - that's because the templates finally fit! YAY!!!   Many thanks to Knight Rider who helped me figure this out.
In other news, 40s & 50s Canadian Den  will be joining us as an adopted room.  Please help to make them feel welcomed.

 I was over in the members only area ( hidden under 'join us' tag) and noticed that if I scroll down over on the right there's the sign in link, a list of what movies I've recently added, and upcoming events -  that's a great reminder for birthdays!
Looking at members, I see many new names, and a lot missing too.  We all knew this would happen. Folks who were nic-only dropping out, or folks waiting til the last minute.   What they're waiting for, I'm not clear on...but to each his own.
I finally managed to jazz up our book mark (add us to favorites) link.  Now it's easier then ever to put us into your bookmarks or favs!    And maybe now y'all will actually see it clap.gif !

Since, MSN is planning on pulling the plug in February on groups ( this was originally schedualed for the 21st)  I decided we'd have a 'warming party' over in chat. Thinking if I can get enough help (hosts) then we can have a chat marathon, starting on Friday and ending on Saturday night.    If you can help out, please let me know.   I would very much like representitive 'hosts' from our adopted rooms as well.

I've been working on revamping our game room, and hope to have the finished product up by the end of week. Well - is anything ever really finished?   I'll always be adding new games, or something.
I've broken the games into catagories in order to make finding games of your liking a bit easier. Of course, at this point in time, some of the areas look a bit skimpy.
In case you're a bit confused, these are the 'real' games, I'm talking about, not our posting ones.  Arcade, Adventure, hidden object, multiple player, etc.   Great relaxers and time killers.

Things are shaping up well for our warming chat-athon!  Several other group rooms, still on MSN are advertizing it as well. As well as some who have moved off of MSN -  Community Managers deserves big kudos for breaking its own rules and adverting it - as well as recommending folks bookmark our happy home! biggrin It's not too early to break out your addy books and invite your friends to join in the merriment.

Can't wait...sounds like it's going to be a great weekend.  I'm a mite dissapointed with the response from the Dungeon...but hopefully it'll turn around as we get closer to the date.
Anything you want me to do Val...just holler..

Well, Didi, you know how it goes - there will always be SOMEONE who claims they didn't 'know', or will wait til the last possible second to squeak in the door.   I'm not too worried over anyone who didn't follow us over from what-ever place.  I figure either they'll come or they won't.  The Attic is meant to be a fun playground for us not a place we 'gotta' be.  ( Heck even some of 'mine'  haven't shown.)
Meanwhile..the new game room is up and running!  party.gif

You'll also want to keep an eye on the main menu of the Attic - change is in the wind!
Don't forget : everyone invite your friends to the BIG chatathon on the 20th and 21st - it'll be an all nighter, so wear your jammies!

Added a few more movies to Popcorn Theater ( it's under the Join button in Attic Main. Check the Movie Listings.)
Changed the template to the Members area. Cleaner  and more efficient.

In an effort to make wandering through the Attic a bit easier, I've added a short cut board under news items.  Just click 'see more' and links to various areas will show up;  Chat, 3 Paws Cafe (add your recipes, browse others!) , Game Room ( real games), Popcorn Theater ( full length feature films), Attic Musings ( post your poems and stories here! Read others) and Daily Trivia.  Select, click, and you're there! biggrin I hope this aids in browsing!
I also added another tutorial on adding your avatar, or editing your profile.  I found out we have stuff at our disposal I didn't even know about!!! Amazing!

Added a siggy request shop.  Not only will we be offering assorted siggies ( or signature tags, as they're also called) but if you have something you would like your name added to, that is the place to ask.  (Please direct the asking to someone. Such as Val can you  - or Didi will you.)

Added a 'short cut' bar to 3 Paws Cafe, and to Attic Musings.  Little by little, I'm getting things more 'united', so that y'all have an easier manuvering time.  This is certainly being one heck of a 'learning experiance' for me.

I wrote to the powers that be about the problem we're having with Word Search and Gimme 50. This is what they have to say:

Hi Valkricry,

The simple explanation: If you use tables to layout your game, and then
apply differet font sizes, colours or text decorations to the entire
table the WYSIWYG editor is going to apply those changes to each word
(or letter in some cases) individually.

That means, the letter "W" would go from just one letter to something
like this: "<span style="font-size: large; color: #006600; font-family:
'Lucida Handwriting', Cursive;"><b>W</b></span>"

This has to do with how style rules apply to table cells.

Logically you might think that the following would apply:

<span style="large font, blue text, arial font size">
<table declaration>
</span>

However instead, automated WYSIWYG editors cannot distinguish that you
want to apply styles to only the table cells (and all of them on that
page). They instead apply the desired style changes to each of the cell
contents.

As a result, 1 character becomes 101 characters. When you multiply this
by a 100x100 grid... it gets too big for a post.

<table declaration>
<table cell1>
<span style="large font, blue text, arial font
size"><b>sometext</b></span>
<span style="large font, blue text, arial font
size"><b>sometext</b></span>
<span style="large font, blue text, arial font
size"><b>sometext</b></span>
<span style="large font, blue text, arial font
size"><b>sometext</b></span>
...etc...
</table cell>
</table declaration

The only real solution to this is to absolutely avoid using colours/font
sizes on the entire table/grid.

So, as I suspected the tables themselves are at fault.   The "Gimme 50" game would be fairly easy to remedy by going to a list format.  Word Search however, would be more tricky.  We could settle for just changing the word colour in the list and not changing it in the playing field , I suppose.   Hmmmm... let me know what y'all want to do.

I've closed the 2 games we were having problems with, at least for now, until we decide what we want to do.

Ok Val...you do what you have to do.  It's a shame.  The first word search did ok.  I'm wondering if we didn't have a colored background if that would help.

Oh..and I found cuddles...

I was wondering that myself, or if maybe we kept the wordsearches to say 40 words or less.  It seems to go wonky around there.  Only way we'll know is through trial and error. Let's try one without a background first.  Once we hit on something that works, I can delete the board and we can start over.

Added a new story to Attic Musings. Fair warning, it's one of my  twisted ones.  For those of you who enjoy a scare, you might peruse Trespauze Manor's Library, Tales to Chill You, another site of mine filled with stories of the more macabe nature.  Of course, you may add a tale of your own if you so wish.  From stories dredged up from the murkier corners of the mind to true occurances all are welcomed.
Also offered up a 'test' word search over in posting games.  We'll play with size, until we find our limit.

Attic Musings can be accessed in a variety of ways,  first you can try the front page of the Attic  by clicking Attic Main near the top of this page : ATTIC MAIN -> 3 Paws Saloon Attic -> Messages -> ,then simply look on the menu for it.   You can also scroll a bit farther up and under the heading Short Cuts click 'see all' which will expand the links to show Attic Musings as well as trivia.

Added a tutorial on how to navigate the Attic from the message board. I hope it proves useful.  After reading Didi's message ( ok now I KNOW if Didi's getting 'lost' a lot of you are) I thought it might be prudent.  Let's face it, we all have our favorite niches and somewhat forget about there being more biggrin.

If you're in the mood for a movie, but don't want TV or to watch the DVDs you have for the umpth time, may I suggest our own Popcorn Theater?  Check out the movie guide for some outstanding full length feature films.  I just added a few more movies and do so periodically so check it out often!

Looking over the Attic as a whole, and I get the instinct impression that we are missing 'something'.   confuse   Sure, navigating the Attic still takes a little effort on members' part, but all you have to do is go to the front page http://3pawssaloonattic.synthasite.com/  and it's all laid out.   And I did add short cuts to the top of the message boards... I dunno. <sigh> I just feel as if there's no 'ooomph' factor.    As far as I can tell, we do offer more then any other 'group room' of our nature.  Still...where's the meat?  The grab you by the throat and make you say, "WOW!" factor?   I'm missing some element...I just don't know what.

You know, I never realized how many posting games we have, until I played nearly every one of them today.  Goodness!  Then of course  I popped over to play Daily Trivia. Irks me that they removed the ability to link back to your own site - but...Eh, can't have everything.   I think I'll start a new Trivia game called "Get Didi" dang she is good!  wink

As you can see by the index of the message board, I'll be moving Attic Musings over to this board.  I am also considering moving 3 Paws Cafe over also.  It's something I have been mauling over for sometime.  I think it may make things a bit easier for y'all.  Get rid of those multiple sign ins!

Added a new navigation menu over in the members area, making things a bit more seamless.  It also makes hoping about a bit easier. If you look up, our 'shortcuts' here are now in color.
As I mentioned before, photo albums are now available for those wishing one. I no longer need to 'invite' you, before you can create one, or view them!
I installed a new members map, so get over there and add yourself! (You too, Didi)
The calendar has been upgraded to include holidays (USA and Canada) and members may now add events as well.  If you haven't poked around in awhile you might like to. wink

I'd like some feedback on how y'all would feel about having old fashioned trivia once a week in chat. "Old fashioned' meaning no bots involved, no real timer, and typos not counting against you, as long as it's close.  A round would be approx. 10questions, and we'd do it for perhaps 1 or 2 hours depending on how it was going.

We now have a dj twice a week in chat . Nomad appears on Mondays and Fridays, and will take your requests.   Sock hops in the Saloon! Yahoo!

Ok, now here's the deal, PTB (Powers That Be) have done some redisigning, and I've been able to move our shorts cuts actually INTO the nav bar!  YAYYYYYYYY!  That is something I've wished for since the beginning.
I've added a few more movies to Popcorn Theater too.
You may have noticed that Synthasite has changed it's name to Yola. This doesn't effect you directly. Your bookmark to the Attic will still work.

I moved some of our 'topics' into the Archive - just ones no one has posted to in months.  I can always move them back if anyone desires them.
Kudos to GZ aka Zeus for his 'Man Show', perhaps more of you males will post! lol

Missing Link?  I went through "Links Out There" this morning, which is exactly how it sounds, if you're unfamiliar. My attempt at MSN Groups being able to leave a trail of where they've gone to, and also promote other sites that seem worthwhile.  One of the rules, is your site must be able to be viewed.  I think this is reasonable , as I don't want us advertizing 'adult sites'.  Also, sites that you must join before even seeing give me the willies.  A lot like buying a pig in a poke.   Anyway, if someone wonders where their link went - it could well be that I deleted it for infringement of the rules.
