USA cases: 277,985. Deaths: 7146.     cases Illinois: 8904 deaths:157   my county cases: 176/ my city 67  deaths=9.

Sounds to me as if your area is taking the social distancing very seriously, Fergie, and that's a good thing!  We still have idiots showing total disregard for it, and our stores are just starting to limit customers in, and enforcing the 6 ft  rule. The recent ban of reusable bags has touched off some hostility, which is rather stupid. Most places will let you use them, IF you pack it yourself.  Of course that's just in my neck of the woods. I'm hearing in some areas they won't allow you to even bring them in.

We're hearing some interesting things on government financial relief. Like a $1200 stimulus check, and an additional $600 per week if on unemployment.  Personally, I'll believe it when I see it, and I wonder what the catch is.  Unemployment rates are skyhigh, approaching the Great Depression's levels, so I imagine there's some sort of limits on who gets it and how much.Another rumour is doubling the food stamps... Honestly I don't understand the math involved.  If we were only allowed x amount, based on income and family size + funding available, where is all that extra coming from for the NATION at a much higher level than be4?    Even the agencies involved don't have much information on it.

We have been at the stay-at-home level since March 16, and it has been extended until April 30th, at least.

What about a mask, Wolfie? Are you planning on wearing one?

I find it rather ironic, that living in an area where wearing your hoodie up, ski masks, sunglasses or anything that blocked a clear view of your face into a store was taboo, that those same stores are now demanding you wear a mask.   I haven't seen that the crime rate has gone up either.

We've been under the stay-at-home rule since March 20th.  It's been extended to April 30, and I suspect it will go even further.

For the past 3 weeks I've been fighting a cold/allergy combo. Our weather has been nuts. Prime example yesterday we barely reached 47f today we're at 80f, but by Thursday they say back to the 40s. The upshot of this is just as I'm starting to feel a bit better - wham I get slammed again.  I don't even really feel that bad, but right now if you cough/sneeze/sniffle everyone acts like you have the plague.

I was watching some recent news footage from China and was amazed to see a large number of people walking around with masks covering their mouths only. So do these people think that the nose is not a vulnerable spot in catching COVID-19? What I do know is that trying to breathe through these surgical masks is hard work!

Wolfie, I share Val's sentiments. Please be careful for yourself and those people relying on you.

Our government is providing (what looks like) relatively accurate information on case numbers, restrictions and "what do I do if ...". Then the media get hold of this information, turn it upside down, give it a shake (not stirred) and deliver their own ****tail of either "dooms day" or "bright side of life" news.

Jadeite also pointed out that the statistics could be easily manipulated by limiting the number of people being tested. The extreme example would be North Korea. Nobody tested, no cases and no deaths.

So, today we have (approximately) 1.4 million cases (Worldwide), 383,000 cases (USA), 56,000 cases (United Kingdom), 1,750 cases (South Africa) and 5,900 cases (Australia).

I sometimes wonder what the real numbers look like.

Another thing the media is doing is announcing that the number of cases has increased by "XXX" without telling us the increase is due to testing.  The number seems to increase dramatically overnight. This causes undue worry. But then too, I wonder how many cases we won't know about as they go unverified.  Now they're saying that that cough & flu back in December may have been this.  Will they ever really know? Probably not.  The numbers will never tell the whole story, and the media will never paint an accurate picture.

I wonder how many in nursing homes and retirement centers actually passed on because of this that went unnoticed before it became a 'thing'. After all they're old and the old die of pneumonia often.  No shaming, but the staff may not have thought twice about it.

Hope everyone's doing okay during these stressful and scary times. For us in Australia, the hoarders who descended on the supermarket shelves like a swarm of locusts have mostly subsided. Or maybe they're now huddling at home, safe behind their fortress walls of toilet paper, rice, pasta and tinned food. Now the items in short supply are flour, cake mix, office furniture, gaming units, gardening or hardware items, and home decorations. Hmmm, Maslow's hierarchy of needs could be at work here.

We have a funny tp story:

Last month, Rex went out shopping at an early time. He came home all grumpy, having missed out on the last 4-pack of tp. But he was a good boy and didn't stomp, or chomp on people.

As we hadn't been hoarding, we had just enough to last for another week. I suggested we get a takeaway breakfast from a café that was a block away. Quietly, I asked the Powers-That-Be for help. We parked in front of a shop I hadn’t really noticed before. My attention was caught by some colourful fabric on display. Went inside for a look. And, they sold toilet paper. We bought 4 rolls for AU$1 each (65¢ US). Thank God for small mercies. 🙏

An acquaintance of mine had posted on social media asking if anyone knew where she could get hand soap, she'd been 3 shops and all were out.  An hour or so later she posted a picture of a bottle with a note - left on her porch by the 'soap fairy'.   Stories like that and your shop one are good to hear.

Nice stories from both our ladies. I wish I had a good one to add.

Things are getting nasty around here. Only this morning, I woke up to the news that a shop owner had been stabbed to death, his business partner taken to hospital with stab wounds, and all because of their refusal to sell a man cigarettes. The ban on tobacco and alcohol is really getting to some people.

Jadeite, you are so lucky to be able to buy takeout food. Here, all restaurants, fast food outlets etc, have been closed down. Not even supermarkets are allowed to sell cooked food, as these are deemed "Non-essentials". Not that we buy takeouts often, but I will miss my pie lunch on Wednesdays - that used to be our after-shopping treat.

On the brighter side, our shops seem to be fully stocked with all the basics.

Here all the food places have to be either drive-thru or curbside, no dining or walking IN the establishments.  Many are offering no contact delivery.

I understand tobacco is 'non-essential', but I don't understand it's being banned, same with the alcohol.  People shoved into a situation which is being made more stressful by banning their 'comforts' is a recipe for violence and riots.  My understanding is some of the states out here are doing the same though.  Those poor men - I do wonder if the stabber at least made off with some smokes.  Of course karma would have him being caught just as he was going to light his first cig.

Val, here, even drive-thru's have been closed down. No hot food available anywhere, except from your own kitchen. And, for the poorer communities, things are really becoming desperate. Not even micro-farms are allowed to operate. Many people are phoning NGOs pleading for food for their children, or a sick relative. Many won't even have jobs to go back to at the end of our extended lockdown. There are rumors that the lockdown may even be extended again! Government isn't orchestrating any sort of feeding schemes for these people in dire need. Food riots are breaking out in parts of the country. I feel so sorry for them, but can only do a tiny part to help.

The news didn't mention any smokes being stolen by the criminal. He was known by his assailants, and his name given to the police by the survivor. He was caught, and charged with murder, and attempted murder.

That's just crazy,Fergie. I had no idea SA was being hit so hard.  While some are reporting food shortages in the US, my state seems to be doing ok. Those of us who have the link/snap card (food stamps) have been raised to the maximum allowance, which is $200 a month for 1 person.  When my friend took me to a big store this week, I did notice limits on many items, and not as large of a variety when it comes to meat, and some of the other foods.  But there was still plenty to be had.

Are they at least allowing home gardens?   I've heard some states are not allowing seeds to be bought as they're 'non-essential', but we're well into our growing season. We keep getting freak snow storms and cold so I don't know what that'll do to the crops. They've closed down our farmer's market, and any stands that sold fruits and veggies.

I have noticed getting a slot to have food delivered is almost impossible. For the past month I've tried daily through 3 different stores to have food delivered so I wouldn't have to bother anyone, and have been told the same thing "No delivery slot available".  I can imagine for many this is a real hardship. I'd be screwed if not for the kindness of a friend and my daughter for any 'real' groceries.

Which news items can a person believe these days? For days, I have been reading how only NGOs are providing food relief for the under-privileged, now this item appears. m.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/lockdown-allegations-of-officials-hoarding-food-parcels-disgusting-ramaphosa-20200420 I don't know which is more disgusting, non Governmental involvement, or what is stated in this latest article.

There are numerous reports of officials abusing their power, or just being plain a**es, as in this next article.
m.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/diabetic-man-fined-for-trying-to-go-to-pharmacy-to-get-prescription-meds-20200420

I am giving the links so I won't be misconstrued.

Val, home gardens are allowed, but many of the indigent folks don't have the land, or sufficient water to make this possible. So many live in shanty towns with no arable land and use a communal tap (faucet) shared by hundreds. Social distancing for these people is almost an impossibility.

They have closed your fresh fruit and veg stalls, Val? Are they crazy?
We are lucky to have a large fruit and veg store, belonging to Portuguese farmers, out of town, but not too far from us. Within the last year or so, they added on a 'meat market'. Their prices are better than stores in town.

We can still get fruits and veggies in the grocery stores, just not anywhere else. At least not where I live.

As far as what to believe in the media...that's a harsh call to make.  I don't think anyone knows the actual truth going by the reports.  Except for what you hear 'first hand' from someone in that particular situation you can't trust the info, and even then it's suspect.  Even in the States, they are differing from each other so much I sometimes wonder if we're still one country.

Some are reporting empty shelves in stores, or severe shortages. Other's complain they can not go out at all. There's reports of some areas requiring facemasks even to check your mail or take out the trash.  I heard that in Washington one elderly lady was threatened with a fine for sitting out on her own porch 'too long'.  I know in my own city, we're not allowed to sit in the park for more than 5 minutes - and basically those parks are closed.

I've heard that people are reporting others for not 'respecting' the stay at home rules, but have no idea what becomes of that.

The good news here in Australia is that we have apparently "suppressed" the rate of infection. A lot less cases have been reported in the past few days. Some states have reported none at all. Of course, this could mean that affected people simply haven't been found or gotten round to being tested. But it is an encouraging sign. Thank God.

If the trend continues, they're hoping to ease some restrictions in 3 weeks. Like allowing elective surgery for people with non life-threatening but chronic ailments. I'm just thankful I got my knee surgery done late last year. Just a few months before the craziness started.

Most of the food and tp are back in supply. We have enough for a while not to need going to the big stores. Just the weekly walk to the bakery for fresh bread, which counts as our exercise.

Rex's hair clippers went kaput. Which meant he was at my mercy. Bwahahaha. With my handy hairdresser's scissors - super sharp! - and a small comb, I did the job. The first attempt left him a bit patchy in parts. Oops. But I managed to coax him into letting me have a 2nd try and I tidied up the loose ends.

Our favourite Chinese BBQ restaurant delivers and a few fast food chains still operate their drive-thrus. Today, Rex and I went for a short drive a few suburbs away to get a bacon burger for him and fried chicken for me. The 2 places were right next door to each other. There was a queue of cars waiting but it wasn't that long before we got our food. Rex ate the fries and I ate a wing on the way. Food was still warm when we got home.

That will be our Big Expedition for a while. The sun was shining and we got to go out for fresh air. Everyday is day to be enjoyed. Stay well everybody.

In these dreary days of lockdown, (day 27 of hard lockdown) anything out of the ordinary is exciting. LOL.
Yesterday, Ray happened to be in our front yard when an elderly African man called out to him. He drew Ray's attention to a pigeon hobbling down the road, in danger of being killed by a passing car. Ray called out, "Catch it, and bring it here!" The old man did as Ray asked. Ray shouted to me to come outside, quickly, which I did. He passed the pathetic bundle of feathers to me.
In the meantime, the old man was asking Ray for bread. We didn't have any bread per se, so we sent him on his way with a parcel of cheese rolls and (home-grown) tomatoes. The man was obviously happy, as a huge smile spread over his lined face.
Ray cordoned off a corner of our lapa while I held the bird. It pecked at my hand, trying to free itself - thank goodness it doesn't have a sharp beak like a parrot. When the enclosure was ready, I gently set the pigeon down inside it. I fetched a small bowl of water, and crumbled up a stale crust of bread. I backed up to watch from a hidden vantage point. The poor bird was soon tucking into the food.
My knowledge of birds is minimal, so we are hoping that with food, water, and rest, the bird will recover enough to fly away one day.

Fed raw popcorn (maize), rice, white or brown, split peas, barley, buckwheat (kasha), canary seed, etc., are all good first options to feed a lost bird with. Pigeons also like a bit of veggies and fruit. Too much bread forms dough balls in their little tummys.  Hopefully your feathery friend is doing well.  :)

Anyone asking for a bit of bread is probably hungry, and the old man quite possibly got much more than he hoped for.  It's so good you were able to share. That makes me happy.

I think we're on day 39 of the stay at home (since March 16). I swear if not for the computer telling me I wouldn't know what day of the week it was let alone the date, each day is much like another with small differences.

Apparently in Illinois this has shuttered dentists as well. I lost a temp crown and have tried for a week to get hold of my dentist to no avail, I never even thought about the impact on them. But it makes sense - they're asking we stay 6 feet apart and they're maybe 6 inches from your face.  Also it frees up PPE for hospitals. I'm told we can get help for 'emergency dental work' but this is considered 'cosmetic'.  Upside is no pain - it had a root canal.  So I'll try and be patient.

Has anyone else been having problems with focusing or having the energy to do tasks?

Once when I was having a bento box lunch at the Japanese place up up the road, a fat grey-and-white pigeon waddled in the door. The shop girl freaked out, shrieking at the sight of the bird. The bird panicked, flying further into the shop rather than out the door. It flapped over the cabinet of fresh-made sushi and was banging itself against the glass window, trying to get out.

I got up from my table and asked the girl for a rag or kitchen towel. Then I wrapped the cloth over the pigeon, held it firmly to me and made quiet shushing noises to it. It went still as soon as the cloth covered its head. I tried not to hold on to it too long because I could feel how scared it was.

Then I went outside, stood on the footpath and waited until there was no traffic turning into the side street. I tossed the bird high into the air, releasing it from the towel, praying I would do this right. It flapped its wings hard the instant I let it go and flew across the road and up to the trees. Thank God it didn't fall splat.

The whole batch of sushi had to be thrown out. But the bird was ok. Someone was watching over it.

I can't be bothered to get 'dressed'. I've been lounging around in baggy oversized t-shirts and such. Since we're not getting any visitors, comfort is the preferred style. My mum would be horrified. Sorry mum. Shhh. Don't tell her.

We have gazillions of things to do. Stuff to declutter. Teddy bears to supervise. Dust bunnies to defeat. But apart from fixing our meals when we get hungry, washing up, doing a weekly load of laundry, I haven't had the energy. I might rouse myself once a fortnight to vacuum.

Sleep is another funny thing. I've been having problems sleeping through the night. On average, I might sleep for a few hours and then wake up. Then come late afternoon, I'll crash for another few hours. I'd wake to get dinner (late) and then the cycle starts again. I've tried not having a nap in the afternoon and going to bed earlier. But I'd still wake up after 2 or 3 hours, feeling I've never slept at all. Not getting enough sleep could be affecting my get-up-and-go energy levels too.

Oh well, I might revert to the good old warm milk at bedtime and relaxing music routine. Who's got a tried-and-tested nightcap recipe or bedtime routine?

Thanks for the list of foods for "Birdie", Val. (Not a very imaginative name, I know.) The last time I fed pigeons was before you were born ...1953. I remember there were vendors selling peanuts to feed the pigeons in Trafalgar Square, London.

A crust of brown bread was all I had at hand to feed Birdie. I have since cooked up a small pot of mielie meal (maize meal to all you non South Africans), and some white rice. The other things you listed, I don't have, unfortunately. I feed Birdie twice a day, alternating the food - morning, and just before sundown. S/he only comes out to eat once I am out of sight. I don't really want to tame the bird, as I am hoping it will be strong enough to fly free soon.

Val, hang in there with that tooth. You are fortunate to not have pain. Maybe I was just lucky that my dental appointment fell on the first day of lockdown. I was in pain, and my cheek was swollen. I was given a script for antibiotics, but decided not to take them. I know that they kill more than they are supposed to. I didn't want to compromise my immune system any more than it already was, I decided to tough it out.

Jadeite, I have been taking a small glass of red wine as a nightcap. Works for me. I too have been feeling rather lethargic; thought it was just me, but it seems to be a general malady. Most days I spend the whole day in my nighty and gown ... disgusting, I know. I have to coerce myself into any form of work. I am ashamed to say that I spend most of my time playing games, like free cell and solitaire on my PC.

BTW, smart move with the intruder pigeon.

Apparently PJs are the global dress code during this time.  I might get dressed if I decide to take a walk or trek to the store, but that's about it.

There's nothing disgusting about staying in jammies, as long  as you don't forego personal hygiene as well, and I'm not talking about shaving.  I thought about it and if I was a guy I'd probably be trying to grow a beard and mustache about now.  Reason for that thought was I thought I'd gotten a new neighbor across the way - some bearded bloke, until he called out Hi and waved. He's lived there like the past 5 years or so  lol.

I think Birdie is a perfectly acceptable name for the pigeon - especially when not planning on keeping him. Mom, bless her heart, always told me not to name strays, because then it became a pet.  I don't think the occasional crust of bed will hurt - as long as it isn't the mainstay of his diet.

I sorted out a drawer in my wardrobe yesterday and unearthed a set of pjs (jammies), plus a few old t-shirts that would be perfect for lounging about. Rex donated a grey track pants that was too short for him. A bit loose but comfy. Now I just have to cut about 6 inches off the hem so I don't trip myself wearing it!

Our priority delivery from Woolworths arrived. The items were ok. They looked like what they were supposed to be. No weird surprises. We have a packed fridge and have a full freezer at last. Between the swarms of locusts that stripped the shelves for the past 2 months and the scarcity of delivery slots, this has taken us some time.

Fergie, we hope that Birdie soon recovers and makes it back into the skies. Sending out good vibes to everyone that everything continues to be ok for you too.

Jadeite, I am visualizing you in your new lounging outfit ... LOL. It sounds something like mine, at the moment.

Our restrictions have been lowered to level 4, as from 1 May. We are allowed hot food deliveries and take-outs. Ray went to buy pies for us yesterday. Yum, yum! The cigarette ban was supposed to be lifted, but two days prior to the lifting, some old witch in parliament said "NO!" Sooooo, the black market flourishes once more. I believe Government has taken a R3 billion knock in taxes from this ban, so far. They have until 10am Monday morning to reverse the ban before the TAB takes her to court.

Birdie seems to be doing okay. I doubt s/he will ever fly away at this rate ...... too fat to fly. Birdie isn't quite as timid as s/he was at the beginning. I can get pretty close to the enclosure before s/he ducks back under cover of the shelf.

Spring seems to finally have arrived here, warmer temps with the eruption of color as flowers decide to bloom.  Yesterday lawns were littered with people enjoying the sunshine.  Even the downstairs folks and I were sitting out on the porch.

Of course the main topic was the virus. Seems they are of the 'we're going to lose our freedoms' ilk, foreseeing things to get a lot worse. I found it disturbing that they're stocking up on ammo. But, I do have to agree, when people get desperate they do stupid things, having self-defense in line doesn't hurt.  Just hope they're wrong is all.

Our stores seem to be fairly well stocked. I noticed that our little store is carrying disposable face masks and gloves. The masks are like $2 each, and are 1 time use.  Many stores (according to online)  have them it seems. Illinois is mandating we wear them in public where 6 ft distancing isn't possible, or in stores.  This confuses me, I keep hearing there's a shortage and even the medical line is hurting for them - so where are they all coming from?  I don't know what to believe.

Lock Down Dress Code = Trackies and T-Shirt. Well, it works for me, except that we've had a cold snap, so I'm swapping the T-Shirt for the "Hoodie".

We are starting to notice cracks in our Government's campaign to save us all from ourselves.

The latest strategy is to get us to download a mobile phone application that will allow the Government to track our movements and store in a "very secure database" that will only be used to pinpoint contacts points of people when there is a breakout of the virus in a localized area. The Government only needs about 4 million people to download the app, so there will be no need of coercion.

Well, the Government announced that after only 2 days, they had more than 4 million mobile phone downloads. There were a lot of questions from the media, about law enforcement using this information and how could they guaranty the database would be secure from international hackers? After a few awkward moments with not many answers, the Government changed their message to the easing of Lock Down restrictions.

So why did we feel like the person that's waiting for the punch line to a really bad joke?

The answer came with the next message from the Government. They could only ease these restrictions when the general public could be trusted. This "trust" could only be earned when more people downloaded the mobile tracking app. So now we need 7 million downloads.

Up until now, all Australian Government bodies (and the vast majority of Australian citizens) have done a fantastic job keeping this virus under control and not overwhelming the health care system. I just pray that we do not descend into petty political squabbles and finger pointing.

It does sound like you guys are seeing a few cracks appear as well.

We sure seem to be living in extreme times!

Fergie, maybe Birdie got the message to isolate itself in a safe place. Will be interesting to see what happens when restrictions are lifted.

Our weather is getting cooler too, T-Rex. We are averaging 22C/70F at the moment. I think our rains are done for the season.

Our Government was also talking about electronic tracking, but I don't think too much was done about it. They can't even get the virus stats out on time. We are only hearing what happened 12 hours ago.

Our younger daughter who lives down at the coast, is coining the $. Under normal circumstances, she runs a tuck shop at a high school. Now that the schools are all shut, she has started a little business of her own, from home. She is making masks, and selling them - adult, and various child sizes. Having worked at a school, she has loads of contacts, but we all know, the best advert is by word of mouth. Some ladies want multiple masks as they are using them as fashion accessories ....LOL.

Here are two pics of Raylene, showing off samples of her work.

I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing well, Fergie.  If you ask me everyone needs more than one mask, so that you can clean it between outings.  Murphy's law has aptly illustrated that if you only have one, the moment you wash it, that's when something will happen that you need it NOW.  Because our weather is so unstable at the moment (we actually have a freeze warning, and it's our 'spring') I have one in my winter coat pocket, one in the spring jacket, one in my purse, and a 'spare' in my wallet.  That way no matter what, I should be able to put my hands on a mask.  The 'rules' keep changing, and I can't keep up.

I have noticed that all this 'stay at home' has made folks hungry for human contact - even if it's just a sentence or two.  I've even had teenagers call out to me from their porches/drives.  That sort of freaked me out, until I realized what was happening.  We all crave contact with the outside world that doesn't come across airwaves, some small action that isn't 'stale' from repetitiveness; and if it comes from a complete stranger so be it.  A wave, a 'hey', anything to let you know the outside is still there.

We too have been noticing many more hoots and waves from strangers as they drive by. A way of saying, "Hey, I am still OK, and see you are too!" In our area we have relatively low infections, and no deaths that we know of. But lockdown has made many more 'criminals'. So many people are trading illegal smokes, even at exorbitant prices. Whatever the reason for the ban on tobacco, I fear it has failed dismally.

Since Nicky has been working half-day, she seems to have become more 'domesticated', LOL. She has been trying new recipes, and even done some sewing ..... she sent pics to prove it, ha ha. She also tried to cut her own hair, but with disastrous results. She says she had a fight with the clippers, and the clippers won. Oh my! She didn't look happy at all! At least hair can grow back.

Hallelujah! Alcohol was unbanned on the 1st of this month. (Note: heavy sarcasm.) Now, trauma units all over the country are overflowing with alcohol related injuries. Really!?! Now if cigarettes had been unbanned instead, this would never have happened. I despair for our government; what were they thinking?

www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times/news/2020-06-07-nightmare-at-hospitals-as-alcohol-takes-its-toll/

And as for the world wide riots over an unarmed black man having been killed by a law-enforcement officer in the US, our country/government is waking up a bit late. Now, all of a sudden, they are remembering the unarmed non-white man that died at the hands of army members, right at the beginning of our lockdown. Bludgeoned to death in/on his own property. His killers are still unprosecuted.

Some schools reopened on the 1st, then promptly shut again. They will try again this coming week, despite many teachers have tested positive for the virus. Fortunately, Shen's school was given the option to continue with on-line education. Shen says she prefers it, and seems to have taken to it like a duck to water. She finishes writing exams on the 12th.

confuse The alcohol and tobacco bans still make no sense to me.   Of course bans on that type of thing has never fazed my family much, because we had Uncle Lossie.  He'd just fire up the still and fetch some harvested 'bacca from the smoke house.   Roll your own, and if you want menthol too bad, but the shine burns with a blue flame so you know it's pure.  Of course you don't want  the new stuff, he'd tell you. No, you want the aged stuff - at least 3 days old.   That man was quite the character.  Look you straight in the eye and say, "You know what you think you saw? Well you didn't."  confuse

Not sure what our schools will be doing come the fall, there's rumors all over the place. We'll just have to wait and see.  About the only thing I'm fairly sure of is most of us (kitchen) will still have jobs. Either packing meals for the online kids (like now), or for like normal.

Nice to hear you are assured of a job when things go back to 'normal', Val. So may people here don't have that luxury.
I would have loved to have met your Uncle Lossie; he sounds quite a character.

There is talk of reinstating the alcohol ban. There have been such a spate of murders, mostly of women and children. That is beside all the other alcohol related fights, drunken driving etc.

We survived the coldest night/day (so far) of the winter, without electricity. -3 up to 9C or of you in the US, 26 up to 48F. We were in the dark/cold from 5:30pm on Thursday night till 10:30pm on Friday. Our whole town was in darkness, as a sub-station 'blew up'.
Birdie survived - I put down layers of newspaper for him to stand on. I was hoping he would be able to fly away before the big freeze came. He has been flapping his wings .... exercising them, I think, so I know he is healing and getting stronger. Daily, I hope to find the enclosure empty; that he has flown off to find his old home and friends. He isn't quite as timid as he was, but still scuttles under his shelter when I get right up to the enclosure.

Go Birdie!!

I'm sure he will be just fine under your care. He'll probably wait out the winter (-3 degrees ... eek) and go out looking for mates in spring.

I haven't seen any statistics on domestic violence here but Jadeite was concerned for people having nowhere to go, during quarantine, to escape violence at home.

What we do have is "unlawful" gatherings of large groups of people to protest about what has happened in the USA, deaths in custody (here) and now mistreatment of illegal immigrants. We suspect that all this behavior is like a pressure release valve for all the angst of people losing jobs and spending a lot of time in isolation.

One good thing that happened was that Jadeite celebrated her birthday while in self isolation. She got a big bunch of flowers, a home baked birthday cake (not me! ... a neighbor) and her favorite dinner (Prawn Laksa) delivered right to the front door.

Just hope that the experts can soon deliver us all a vaccine that works and most things can get back to normal.

We seem to be doing ok in my state. The virus is way down, and things are slowly opening back up.

Nationally, well it's another story. It's as if we live in a snow globe, someone shook it well and the insanity is falling. It's easy to see how so many see this as the end of days, especially when it isn't restricted to just one country, but is global.

I do hope Birdie has some sort of shelter to hide in, Fergie?  Like a mini-hen house or something?  I've never really thought of places like Africa or Australia as getting cold.  In my head, it's like you have eternal summer or spring.

Hello all.

The Australian Corona Blog for today.

It's all happening in the state of Victoria where Melbourne's northern suburbs are experiencing a second "peak" in new infections. In the last week, new infections have jumped from 11 to 75 per day. Internationally, this probably seems like a drop in the ocean, so it is weirdly comforting to know that the authorities have called in the Army to help contain this outbreak.

The positive spin machine has been working overtime in the production of statements like "Victoria is on the edge of being able to manage outbreaks" being the best one I've seen so far. Now if we could only stop those pesky Victorians from visiting Sydney during the school holidays.

The recent protests seem to have run out of puff or has this more to do with restoring the balance between letting off steam and maintaining a safe distance from strangers?

Anyway, stay safe and healthy, because all life matters.

Today is the first time in just over 2 weeks that I have been our of bed for longer than a few minutes. Not because I have been ill, and certainly not for pleasure. I have been laid up because of my own stupidity. I KNOW I am not supposed to pick up heavy things, but what do I do, while Ray is out shopping? I was mopping the floors and picked up a bucket full of water. I just heard, and felt, a huge "Crack" in my spine. Fortunately I was near a door jamb so was able to grab on to prevent myself from falling to the floor. I know, I know, I am an idiot!

Nicky contravened lockdown, bringing Shen to help out for 2 weeks - bless her. BTW, Shen has done well at school again, even though it has all been 'on-line' since lockdown. Nothing lower than 70% for any of her exams, and even 100% for her Engineering Graphics Design, and in the 90s for IT. She takes after Angel - a good brain.

I hope you, my on-line friends, are all well and coping with lockdown. We are on day 104, with no sign of the ban on ciggies being lifted. DAMN! I have to continue being a criminal. *Wink!*

Ouchie, Fergie!  Glad you're on the mend, and it is good the girls could come help.

Had a surprise when I went to put my shoes on this morning, dang foot is so swollen I couldn't!  A misstep on the stairs, I think.  Anyway I find trying to keep it elevated without even a sofa to sit on quite awkward, I can only imagine how frustrating laying a bed must have been!    Hopefully you didn't suffer much pain?

Val, I hope you are all better by now.
My pain, at the moment of injury, was excruciating! I thought I was going to pass out. I would rate the momentary pain as worse than natural childbirth. For the next week I was unable to get out of bed unaided. Now, at least I don't have to depend on Ray's strong arms to lift me. I can still only walk around and sit at my PC for short periods of time. BUT, I am improving. Nicky brought me some "Holy Weed" to make tea from. (Yes, it is legal here.) They say it helps for the pain; I am yet to try it. I am 'old school' and am nervous about such things, LOL.

We are on day 112 of lockdown. Alcohol has been banned again. They say there was a 70% increase of hospital beds being occupied due to alcohol related injuries. There as also been a 300% increase of rapes and other gender based violence since the start of lockdown. Disgusting!!!
Still no positive news for the smokers. *Sigh!*

Weed is legal in most of the states here, but there's a lot of shall we say 'perimeters' you have to stay within. If you get medical cannabis (with out the THC) it doesn't make you high, just relaxes you.

I've been a bit over excited last couple of days - my landlord says they're going to renovate my kitchen!!!   Plus take care of some other things as well.   There's a possibility I'll end up with a new bath as well.

Not sure how I feel on that. I think it might entail removal of the claw-foot tub and installing a regular shower.  I really love that tub. I just bought a new curtain for it too...but on the other hand, it is getting harder for me to get in and out of.  Plus a shower stall might not take up as much room.  *sigh*  Well one thing at a time.

I've given up counting how many days it's been with the virus changes. I simply can't keep up, although the state has opened up quite a bit. Now I'm hearing the 2nd wave is hitting, and I've no idea what that means for us.

How did the renovation of your apartment go, Val? I hope you didn't lose your claw-foot tub - that would have been a disaster.

We have passed 150 days of lockdown. The ban on booze has been lifted (and is being abused once more), and the ban on smokes has also been lifted (for how long?) We are also allowed to visit family members in groups of no more than 10 people at a time.

Shen was so worried that she wouldn't be able to celebrate her 16th birthday, due to lockdown. LOL, with some restrictions being lifted, she will have two 'parties'. Ray and I spent this past weekend at her home. On Saturday they held a family bring-and-braai. Her cousin (our grandson) and his lady-friend were invited; much fun and laughter. It was lovely to have all the up-country family together. Next Saturday she is having a party for friends.

Oh, news flash! I was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. I had to replace my stolen phone, which I must admit, was "out of the ark" (an old Nokia.) I now have a touch-screen phone; just a cheap one. I am still learning to 'drive' it, lol.

BTW, Birdie is still with us. I think T-Rex is correct; s/he is biding the time till spring arrives.

Hey guys, why is everyone so quiet? I sure hope everybody is doing okay!

I don't have much news. I guess the best news is that the virus infection rate is slowing, and the recovery rate is up to 88% here in SA.

The other bit of news is that Birdie can fly again. S/he is walking much better, and faster too. Now that warmer weather is here, I can expect to find the coop empty in the near future.

Hi, Fergie!

Due to some unexpected expenses putting off the remodeling of the bath. I'm just going to give it a 'face lift' with a paint job, and new curtains.  Storm gave us some serious roof damage, and that is more of an immediate need.

Things are going slow though...still without living room furniture.  But, I've finished painting the front room, and today laid the area rug.  Haven't felt like doing much at all the past week.  I've had serious sinus issues, and the Dr. tested for Corvid. Should have the results tomorrow.  I guess because of the shared symptoms he just wants to be sure.

You know, Birdie might not actually ever leave.  Bird's are not dumb, and Birdie knows there's food and shelter with you. So might be s/he'll fly off just to return time after time.  Might even pick you for a nesting spot.

Hello there, everyone. Sorry to have gone quiet for a while.

Fergie, glad to know things are improving in your part of the world. Well done to Shen for keeping up her grades in school. Hope they restore your ciggie supply soon. Maybe it's time to plant some tobacco bushes in the backyard! Birdie sounds like a smart bird. Knows a good thing when it sees it.

Val, your apartment sounds like it's going to be fabulous once everything's done. Remember to take some before-and-after photos to document the process. You'd be amazed at the difference and at how much you've achieved.

As for us, we've had a number of things happening over here for the past few months. Aunty May passed away end-July. Much-loved and greatly missed. As she lived in Hong Kong, they organised the funeral service online via Zoom for family overseas. I left a Prayer for her on 3 Paws.

Mum, who's in Singapore, has been having gastro problems lately. My brother-in-law and niece took her to the hospital a few days ago. They kept her in isolation until the tests for Covid-19 came back negative yesterday. But there's a spot on her lungs, her kidneys are not good and they found an infection in the blood. My elder sister is keeping us updated on WhatsApp. These are worrying times.

Brother-in-law's currently going through chemo for cancer in the plasma. For the past few years, he's had surgery, stem cell therapy and other new treatments to keep it under control. Fingers crossed for him too.

We're managing ok in Australia for now. Our restrictions on food and sundries didn't last very long, thank goodness. Poor Victoria is having curfews and stage 4 restrictions until yesterday. Majority of the mortalities in the country are from there, sadly it was mostly the elderly. All because returned travellers didn't want to follow hotel quarantine restrictions for 2 weeks. Borders are still closed in all the states, though a few are cautiously opening soon. NSW didn't close its borders, except to VIC, but the health services have been managing the hot spots and testing a lot of people.

Rex and I finally went for our regular blood tests. Masks on at all times and using hand sanitisers, keeping our distance. His specialists have been monitoring the results and chatting to him on the phone. I went for my usual bloods and then had to get a scan on my liver. The technician at the time said it was a normal size, not enlarged. Waiting for the doctor to contact me.

Of course, I would stub my right foot a few mornings ago, when I was still groggy getting up from bed. There was blood on the toe nail and now the whole toe has gone dark. Plus a dark line across another toe. Like the hairline fracture I had on my left foot years ago. Oopsie. But as long as I can still hobble around...

Well, the good news is my covid test came back negative. The bad news is I'm on lay-off again.  This would not be an issue, but because one week I earned more than my unemployment, I have to file anther claim, and they are so busy with processing claims, I was asked to try again later... 'later' is such a vague term.

Val, glad to hear your test was negative. Bummer about your unemployment claim though. That's a real pain. Hope they can sort it out again soon.

Things here just get more confusing. I'm still waiting for the findings, but there was a deposit made to my account the same day I was told I had to make a new claim???   evileye Confusing, but grateful, if you know what I mean.

Mean while this covid is doing a number on EVERYTHING.  I'm still without 'real' living room furniture, as it's been held up at the manufacturer's.  Now, I could go off at the seller, but WHY? It's not personally his fault, and at least he contacted me letting me know, so I don't feel 'ripped off', and that's a 'regular' retailer.  Most of the 2nd hand stores (where I thought I'd get arm chairs from) are closed, until when who knows. It is kind of creepy to see 'not accepting donations at this time' signs on places of charity.  Might be quite the spell before the rooms are 'completed', but at least I've my bed, and my computer chair - things could be a whole lot worse.

Val, I hope we see photos once your place is done up. I'm sure it will be wonderful once the dust settles and the paint dries.

Well, here we go again with lockdowns and restrictions. But this time it's really close to home. We have 28 new cases in our area overnight. After weeks of no infections. The strain was from overseas. At least 2 places in our neighbourhood are affected. Fortunately we weren't there recently, but everyone has been told to stay home for the next 3 days. All public places are closed.

We've cancelled our Christmas gatherings with family and friends. Best not risk it, not when things are so iffy at the moment.

Hope everything's ok in your part of the world. Stay safe and well, everyone.

4,712 new cases here (Dec.8-19).

As of December 14 at 3 p.m., the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases are:

STATE OF ILLINOIS
Cases: 856,118
Deaths: 14,394
CITY OF AURORA
Cases: 14,268
Deaths: 188

As you can see, we aren't fairing very well... sorry to hear your neck of the wood isn't fairing better, Jadeite. I just wish we'd hear of somewhere getting free of it and staying free of it.

I just got word we'll remain on lay-off until at least February... but on the upside - I'm almost done painting!!!  YAYYYYYY! I've nearly got the last wall cut in, then it's just a matter of painting it, and doing the trim and doors. Then of course there's the joy of moving everything back... but of course while it's moved may as well clean the floor underneath.  Darn tooting NOT moving these hernia makers  weekly.

Geez, Val, those numbers aren't good. Sure hope things improve soon for you, both Covid-wise, as well as work.

We're still in lockdown here in Sydney Northern Beaches. No one allowed into our area, no one allowed out. Police are on the streets, waiting to stop people. Over 110 cases so far in the past fortnight alone. Before that we had NONE for almost a month, so this sudden outbreak just before Christmas was a shock. Like us, most people have cancelled their Christmas plans and spent it at home. But the rate of infection seems to have slowed down to about 9 yesterday and 7 the day before.

The other states have closed their borders and turned travellers away. But the good news is that other states only have a few people affected from the Avalon cluster in Sydney. Victoria reported NO new cases over this period. Thank goodness.

We had a quiet Christmas, but it was still nice. Peaceful. Caught up with neighbours upstairs and we wore our masks, and kept the proper distance.

The people next door have hung a big red stocking on their front door. We sneaked a few fortune cookies with good luck messages into it. Later that morning, I heard little excited squeals from the children when the cookies were discovered. Secret Santa came by. Shhh...

Hi Wolfie! Glad to hear all is well with you.  Things have been awfully quiet all over.  I guess with the Covid folks are running out of things to say. It's still pretty bad in my state. Another 2,300 something new cases yesterday.  So far:

Illinois
Total cases
1.25M
1,250,000
+2,377
Recovered
-
Deaths
23,542
23,542
+15

But, they say things are getting better?

I'm still waiting on getting the shot, although I 'm hearing that my group will qualify for getting them starting next week.  IF there's enough of the vaccine.

Hopefully all is going well for everyone :)
