From Bev’s last go around in ICU, a number of weeks ago, there was slow steady gains, then suddenly, her blood pressure went wonky, which they corrected again and again and again. Her 2ndwound seemed to be healing nicely, when the eruptions from her first, started again. Fight, fight, fight, back and forth, better, then worse. Antibiotics, blood transfusions, more cat-scans, xrays – what is causing the trouble? – they have never found the “big” source of her devastating infections.
Six days ago, she was again rushed to Critical Care ICU, tubes out of every opening, breathing tube, IV feeding, catheter, more machines than NASA uses. She had 3 destroying infections bombarding every part of her body, being fought with the most potent, expensive drugs known to mankind. She was unconscious for most of this. It was a very serious turn for the worse. No one thought she would make it thru the night. But – Bev being Bev, she fought and was making very slight advances.
Today, in an effort to give her some relief, they removed the breathing tube at which she said – enough – no more. No more breathing tube, no more antibiotics, no more blood transfusions, no massive efforts to save or revive me. It’s too much, too big, I don’t want it anymore – if I’m going – let me go. Her family was there when she was so adamant and the team of doctors (6 of them) were witness to her request. All agree that Bev’s rights to refuse treatment are sacrosanct. Her niece, a top-notch emergency room nurse, just shakes her head and has to agree.
Bev is given a matter of a few hours to a few days before she will be taken from us.
Val Thank you for letting us know about Bev. We had the pleasure of meeting with Bev and her sister. Our prayers are being sent to Bev and her family. Keep fighting Bev.
